So Many Wonders by snip-veritas So Many Wonders by snip-veritas
This piece was so fun to make! I knew I had to do something for Equestria Daily's December Draw-off Event and Fluttershy immediately came to mind. Some of the paper sections were so tiny I had to have the image I made specially printed on larger paper, and her mane still ended up having sections only about a millimeter in width. It was nerve-wracking, but she's too adorable to be the source of too much frustration.

Well damn that's amazing work.
What kind of paper did you use? and what dod you use for the reflective backing?

It turned out wonderfully!

Thank you. The paper is just normal print stock--it had to be because the design was way too complicated and the deadline way too soon to draw the silly thing out, so it had to be drawn digitally, then vectored, then printed. The backing is simple watercolor paper.

Thank you. I don't really have an accurate estimate of the time it took since I kept getting interrupted by work. :(

The sketching probably took eh, an hour? That's just to get the idea out of my brain and onto a digital canvas. Vectoring/finishing took the longest since I had to plan out the layout of all the clouds, butterflies, and hair details so that they wouldn't overlap and so that the paper would remain basically one solid sheet. That stretched over a few days, so I have no idea how long I spent on it. The actual cutting process took surprisingly little time comparatively, probably 3-4 hours tops.

3-4hrs? That means no critical mistakes and redos? Damn, impressive.

Anyway, on a bit unrelated subject - may I ask you to upload your ATG drawings on DA as well? :3 For example, that piece with Princess Celestia, it definitely worth it!

I've tried a few different types of blades, but right now I'm favoring the fiskars fingertip detail swivel knife and the regular fiskars fingertip detail knife. I find that some of the replacement blades I've been finding at the stores break fairly easily, so I'll probably try out the x-acto brand to see if its any more durable. Brand name aside, though, if you're going to get into the hobby you definitely want to get a fingertip knife that has a swivel blade.

Hope that helps, I'm really interested to see what you come up with since your digital work is gorgeous!

The dynamic nature of digital artwork is part of what makes it fun, though. You can start with an idea that changes into something else completely. Papercutting is pretty difficult to sort of make up as you go because, well, all your strokes can't be undone and you have to really think about how your sections interact and whether or not cutting through a section will sever everything attached to it. With this one, for instance, there's a lot of negative space, so I had to make sure there were plenty of sections left connected to support Fluttershy and keep her in place. Strategic use of butterflies is sometimes very necessary.

What program are you using for your digital artwork?

Something like the Fluttershy piece seems like it would require a lot of previous paper cutting work to know where you can and cant create negative space.
Digital work really does allow for a lot of on the fly dynamic changes, which can be good and bad. I like to rough a sketch out first before I jump into a digital painting so that I at least give myself some boundaries.

Normally for my digital work I work in Photoshop CS4 or CS5. However I have a new computer and I cant find my Photoshop dvd, so I'm stuck with a very old version of Photoshop from the late 90's. It's really forced me to work on a more traditional media level, because I cant use neat tools and quick tricks to paint.

Oh, you should check out Easy Paint Tool SAI! It's so much less bulky and resource-heavy than Photoshop, and though it lacks a lot of the special effects/fancy filters, the drawing, coloring, and vector tools are great. If you like to sketch on paper first, one thing you could do to make your lines more polished is to vector over the lines in your original sketch, then make new layers underneath your vectored lines with your various different colors. Very quick and easy to do in SAI. Anyway, here's a link: [link]

I cant thank you enough for the suggestion to try out SAI.

What it can do with vectors saves me soooooooooooooo much time on artwork. I realize that Photoshop and Illustrator are really missing so much in their ability to cope with vectors.

Sure thing. Coloring is also much more efficient, you'll find. The water brushes are awkward at first, but eventually you realize, "Hey, wait--I don't need to block color and then blend if I blend while I'm blocking in colors." You skip a whole step, there. That, and it's nice to have a simple, efficient program to just draw in.

I've been hearing about SAI all over the place and I should probably snag another program to work in until I get a new copy of Photoshop.

That's the one thing that my current dinosaur of Photoshop lacks, is the ability to make vectors.
I have a lot of work waiting for a digital render but I dont want to invest the time if I cant get the results I want.

I'll download the program for sure. I really appreciate it, since I've been away from DA for about two years, I just am not up to date on what everyone's using :)
